UGHHHH don’t you love how everyone is putting out amazing albums this year?
Running from the unexpected to the feel-good-traditional-yet-so-good-you-cant-handle-it style of some bands, 2013 has been full of passionate, selfish music all around. Right now, I would like to point out the AH-Mazing collaboration between two artists that have a very solid history behind them, the synergy achieved is ridiculous, like two parallel universes colliding into this funk, clever rollercoaster of sounds. Elvis Costello and The Roots, paired up to what apparently, is the most unexpected release so far. They met when Elvis stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, show that The Roots play at several nights a week.
The spark ignited when these two found out they had a similar upbringing, QuestLove, The Roots´ founder and drummer, started playing at the age of 7, son of Lee Andrews, from 50s doo-wop band “Lee Andrews & the Hearts”. He later produced heavy names like Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, Al Green, Amy Winehouse and John Legend. Did you know Elvis Costello is Ross McManus´son? (google him) hence the musical knowledge of these great performers that exudes throughout. Costello brings his unique lyric writing and proper British musical demeanor to clash with Questlove´s innovating composing and producing techniques… The mix of vintage sounding vocal filters and harmonies with hip and funky grooves for the single “Walk Us Uptown” just makes me happy to be alive… Every song is a complete trip, sexy tunes like “Refuse to be Saved” and “Wake me Up”, Soul to the core and perfectly mixed bases for “Sugar Don´t Work”, make this the must have musical obsession of the year.
So by now you should think this is a MUST HAVE album. (Buy physical CD´s YAY!).
